Cuthbert Dube fears for his life after suspected state agents demanded his EXIT from ZIFA

ZIFA President Cuthbert Dube was, earlier last week, confronted by suspected state agents who demanded his immediate exit from the apex of national football administration or face dire consequences.

Sources close to the embattled Zifa boss on Thursday said the former PSMAS boss now lives in fear for his life following an incident which occurred at an undisclosed place in Harare on Monday.

The "CIOs", said the source, told Dube they were under instructions to inform him to vacate Number 53 Livingstone Avenue (Zifa headquarters) as he had already overstayed his welcome.

"Cuthbert was approached by three CIOs who told him straight he was no longer wanted by the country's leadership and should resign immediately," said the source.

According to the source, Dube was told "government no longer wanted to see him continue playing a role in sports politics".

Repeated attempts to seek comment from the Harare businessman were unsuccessful as for the umpteenth time, his mobile went on unanswered.

Dube has been ignoring calls from the media since his mega pay scandal as Premier Service Medical Aid Society CEO ignited a parallel push for his ouster as Zifa boss.

Zifa spokesperson Xolisani Gwesela could neither confirm nor deny the incident insisting he could not "comment on that one".

"No, no, no; on that one I can't assist. In fact I am at school. Just talk to the general secretary (Jonathan Mashingaidze). He is the one who can give you a comment on that one," said Gwesela.

Mashingaidze was unhelpful either as he also allowed his mobile to ring unanswered. He further failed to respond to a later text message sent to him on the subject.

Dube is under fire for continuously mismanaging the affairs of the country's most popular sport through downright incompetence and corruption.

June this year he was deposed by Zifa councillors but was immediately reinstated after FIFA raised the red flag, arguing his ouster was unprocedural.

Calls for Dube's ouster reached a crescendo this month after his executive squandered part of the gate takings realised from a Warriors match against Guinea early this month.

His controversial leadership has also not escaped the scrutiny of President Robert Mugabe who last week blasted the Zifa president for alleged greed.

Newly appointed sports minister Makhosini Hlongwane has also taken a dig at the former ZBC board chair, insisting he will not be cosy with someone whose questionable corporate government record tainted the image of the national game.

Government is reluctant to swing the axe on Dube for fear of violating FIFA's hands-off stance by governments on football politics, something that can lead to the country's suspension from international football.

Dube has lamented being singled out for blame in a football system fraught with inconsistencies even at government level.
