Harare Businessman, Mereki, Guns Down Girlfriend, Kills Self

A Harare businessman, Irvine Mereki shot dead his girlfriend before turning the gun on himself in Avondale early on Tuesday.

Preliminary investigations indicate that Mereki shot his girlfriend, who has been identified as Claris Chopamba, before turning the gun on himself. The cause of the fracas could not be readily ascertained.

When reporters arrived at number 44 Oxford Road in Avondale, several vehicles sped away from the scene. Some of the people who were milling around the place attacked the news cameraman and threatened to destroy the camera saying they were at a private function.

The bodies of the two deceased were taken to Parirenyatwa Hospital for post mortem. However, according to information gathered by our news crew, both Mereki, a married businessman and Chopamba were allegedly found naked this morning. Neighbours and relatives are said to to have broken down the door of the house where the horror incident took place inorder to gain entry.

What is critical is that it is said that there was a maid in the house at the time of the deaths as well as a three year-old child. Reports say Chopamba was an affable middle aged lady who owned a boutique in Harare’s city centre. Mereki is the son of the man behind the popular hangout in Warren Park, KwaMereki. He was also a former chairman of Lengthens Football Club.

Police national spokesperson, Senior Assistant Commissioner Charity Charamba called for Zimbabweans to desist from domestic violence, saying people should seek counselling in solving their social problems.

She warned the public against attacking journalists on duty, saying the police are going to deal with the perpetrators.

Meanwhile, Naison Mereki who was part of the gang that assaulted the cameraman has been arrested.
