NOTORIOUS Zanu PF activist and suspected CIO agent Fidelis Fengu, has been sentenced to 12 months in prison for pretending to be an immigration director and forging a letter for a Chinese man who wanted a residence permit.
He will however, likely spend an effective four months behind bars after the rest of the sentence was suspended for five years on conditions.
Magistrate Tendai Mahwe also suspended another four months on condition that Fengu restitutes the complainant by the end of this month.
Delivering his ruling Monday, magistrate Mahwe considered the fact that Fengu was family man with four minor children and a first offender.
The state led by prosecutor, Francesca Mukumbiri, said cases of people masquerading as immigration officers to dupe desperate residence permit seekers were on the rise and there was need to protect the community. She said a tough sentence could help deter potential offenders.
The state proved that between 16 and 23 July this year, Fengu received US$2,000 from Guo Nyongwei to facilitate the processing of residence permit on behalf of Shu Xiaofeng. This was after Shu’s first application to the immigration office was turned down.
Fengu and his accomplice, Francis Hungwe who appeared in court in August, then produced a fake document which they photocopied and gave to Shu. They lied that the document was issued by the immigration department. Shu then presented the document to immigration department in July not knowing it was fake. The matter came to light when verification was done.
Investigations revealed that Shu had been denied a permit and had a pending appeal. Shu then narrated what had happened, leading to the arrest of Hungwe who implicated Fengu.
The name Fidelis Fengu (FF) has been linked to several Zanu PF dirty games including mysterious deaths of senior party politicians — among them retired army General Solomon Mujuru and ex-Mines minister Edward Chindori-Chininga.
Notorious faceless blogger Baba Jukwa claimed that Fengu is the one who was allegedly tasked to kill both General Solomon Mujuru and Edward Chindori-Chininga.
Baba Jukwa also wrote on his page after former RBZ Governor Gideon Gono's farm was gutted by fire alleging that Fengu was responsible.
"Saviour Kasukuwere was already pouncing on him (Gono). He dispatched Fidelis Fengu and his team to go and burn down GG’s chickens to ashes. They wanted to hit where it hurts him most. The war to assassinate GG is now intensifying. GG ran away from the country some three weeks ago to Mauritius and came back to check how his things were moving only to be pounced at by the arsonist Fidelis Fengu," Baba Jukwa claimed.
What is of interest is that Fengu, who according to Baba Jukwa, was labelled a very dangerous man, has acknowledged that the Late General Solomon Mujuru did not perish in a natural accident. Instead, he unlike many other Zanu PF officials, believes foul play was involved. What is however shocking is that he clears himself of any wrongdoing but accuses the former vice president Joice Mujuru of allegedly having a hand in the death of her husband Solomon Mujuru who died in 2011 in a mysterious inferno.
But in July 2013, Baba Jukwa said he knew what exactly happened when Solomon Mujuru was "forced" to meet his creator. Baba Jukwa also accused Fengu of burning Gedion Gono's farm.
"What truly caused the death of Retired General Solomon Mujuru remains an issue of important national inquiry. Some of us who are in the know find it difficult to suppress that information and it is high time the truth has to come out," wrote Baba Jukwa in 2013.
But one Mbya Bvukumbwe said Fengu was in the best position to know who killed Solomon and he must not divert attention and information and further accused Fengu of abducting Itai Dzamara who has been missing for over half a year.
"Its more dangerous in that the person who killed Tongogara, Chindori Chininga... and who recently abducted Itai Dzamara is the person who killed Gen Mujuru," he said.
In fact, Fengu reportedly even told another Zanu PF activist, Energy Mutodi, that Itai Dzamara had skipped the country and was hiding in Botswana. How he got to know about that, nobody knows! Had these still been Baba Jukwa days, maybe we all would have been advised accordingly.
