Bulawayo man sacked for stealing employers whisky

A bartender has been sacked and arrested after stealing whisky from his employer to get into the festive mood.
Mongameli Mpofu (36) of Southworld briefly appeared before Bulawayo magistrate Mrs Learnmore Mapiye charged with theft.
The circumstances as presented by the prosecutor, Mr Malvin Ndzombe, are that on 24 November at around 6pm the complainant, Mr Mehluli Dube, who is the owner of Southworld Bar was taking stock and he noticed that two 750ml Jack Daniels bottles were missing. It is alleged that he found one of the bottles half empty the next day hidden under a chair. The complainant is said to have asked the accused about the missing whisky, but he did not get a satisfactory answer.
On 26 November the complainant was surprised to see the accused bringing out an empty 750ml bottle of Glenfiddich whisky which had been missing for two weeks from behind the shelves.
He asked him and again he gave him a questionable answer, which led the complainant to suspect that the accused was indeed the one who had been drinking the whisky.
He reported the matter to the police leading to the arrest of the accused.
In mitigation the accused claimed that the reason why he drank the whisky was that he was working in an environment that kept reminding him of being drunk yet he could not afford being drunk so stealing was an easy way to be drunk.
He added that he also wanted to taste expensive beer as well as get into the festive mood. The magistrate is yet to make a ruling.
