Man (23) bashes in-laws for demanding 10 lobola beasts
A bride price negotiation which was expected to leave smiles on Masimba's family in Lusulua area, Binga, turned nasty when their son-in-law reportedly ran amok and assaulted his father-in-law (65) and wife-to-be for demanding 10 beasts.
The man, Evans Mandimba (23), had gone for lobola negotiations at Ndumiso Masimba's homestead on 9 December. It is reported that Evans and his elders were given a warm welcome upon arriving at Masimba's place. Hell broke loose when it was time for Masimba family to name the 'price'. They demanded 10 beasts if he was serious with marrying their daughter Loveness (17).Evans was astounded by the charges and demanded to know why they were demanded 10 beasts as their daughter was 'special'. It seems his sentiments never went down well with the hosts resulting in a misunderstanding in which Evans' crew were shown the door. Evans, who was fuming like a stabbed bull at the time, allegedly started accusing Loveness of wasting his time. On his way out, he reportedly slapped his lover on the face and it was like pouring paraffin on fire.
The father-in-law intervened and tried to stop the fuming Evans from assaulting his daughter but tables turned on him. Evans reportedly thrashed the 65-year-old man all over the body with fists and booted feet.
For his 'iron fist' antics, Evans was hauled before the magistrate, Mr Stephen Ndlovu, facing assault charges. He pleaded guilty and was sentenced to 12 months in prison which were wholly suspended on condition that he completes 240 hours of community service at Sinamakonde Primary School.
Evans begged the court to understand his situation arguing that he loved Loveness, therefore when he was 'overcharged' he felt betrayed resulting in him acting out of anger.
