Teachers at a special needs school were told to give razor blades to a troubled student so he or she could self-harm in a ‘safe and controlled manner’, it has been reported. The school’s headteacher and principal decided it was the best way to help the vulnerable pupil.
Now an investigation is under way into the move at Unsted Park School — which teaches boys and girls aged between seven and 19 — in Godalming, Surrey, UK.
The policy was abandoned after just six days following protests from staff.
Principal Steve Dempsey and headteacher Laura Blair could now face a Teaching Agency hearing over allegations of unacceptable professional conduct.
They told staff to give the student access to sterilised blades and escort them to a bathroom — where the pupil could cut themselves.
Staff were then ordered to wait outside, checking on the pupil every two minutes, before finally dressing and cleaning the wounds.
A spokesman for the Priory Group which runs the school told the Sun: ‘This was a short-term, local procedure introduced by the headteacher and school principal who genuinely believed it was in the best interests of the pupil.
The school includes children with Asperger’s Syndrome and autism and has been rated in an Ofsted report as ‘good with outstanding features’.
